Changing a Tractor Tire

Depending on what kind of tractor you own, the ease of changing the tire can vary significantly. The smallest tractors are the ones used for home gardening. These use tires that are usually tubeless and made specifically for use on grass. Changing one of these is a simple procedure. All you need is a car jack, a new tire equivalent in size and tread type, and a few small tools. With these machines the rear wheels take on sixty percent of the work so make sure the tractor tire you put on is of good quality.

When changing a tractor tire for one of the large farm tractor this can be much more of a challenge. You can do it the easy way and call for a service truck to come out and do it for you or you can try to do it yourself. If this is your choice then you’ll need a clean, dry, level area to work. The first thing to do will be to block all the wheels so the tractor can’t roll. You’ll need a much larger jack to use to raise this sized tractor. Make sure you have the right one before starting. Do not begin until you certain that the tractor is safely positioned, that it cannot roll. When changing a tractor tire your safety must be your paramount concern. Depending on the size of the tractor tire it’s possible it will need to two people to change it.

The first step is to open the valve and allow the tire to deflate. Using the correct tools then remove the tube. Sometimes this can be difficult because the tube can be stuck or even rusted in place. Lubrication may be necessary to get it off. Once the tube is off remove the tractor tire. The rim will then need to be cleaned thoroughly. It will likely have some rust on it so a wire brush would be useful in cleaning it up. Once clean the rim should be greased before you reverse the procedure and remount the new tractor tire.
