Changes in the Modern Farm Tractor
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

When we talk about a farm tractor a distinctive picture always comes to mind. We see a vehicle with two large back wheels and two much smaller front wheels. The farmer is sitting in the nearer on a single seat, in an open cab, with the steering apparatus in front of him. The engine is in the front as well. This basic design has been the way farm tractors have looked for decades.

There have been some changes however. Tractors are easier to use as they now outfitted with power steering and power brakes. The farmer no longer has to sit out in the open sun when he’s working. There are now enclosed cabs. These are often equipped with air conditioning, radios or CD players. These days’ modern tractors can be bought with many of the same options as a luxury automobile.

The operation of the farm tractor has no changed much. There are four floor foot pedals that control it. One pedal is for the clutch. Two of the pedals are for the brakes. There are two pedals because each pedal stops the wheels on only one side. This is done to help when the tractor is having difficulties like being stuck in the mud or making a tight turn. Both pedals would be pressed together to stop it. Some farm tractor models can be equipped with f our wheel drive. In that case the braking is slightly different. The last pedal is used to determine the speed at which the vehicle will travel. It’s a foot throttle. This is very similar to the gas pedal in a car and a fairly recent feature.

The farm tractor is overall much safer than it used to be. One feature that is very important is the rollover protection systems. If there is so cab this is usually a steel bar the runs over and above the driver to protect them should the vehicle be involved in an accident where it tips over. For farm tractor models with cabs, this is built into the frame. This system has saved the lives of many farmers who otherwise could be crushed in tragic accidents.
